Due for release in the UK on 10th August, Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero\u00a0is a 2018\u00a0computer-animated\u00a0adventure film\u00a0about the real-life\u00a0Sergeant Stubby<\/a>, a stray Boston Terrier\u00a0who becomes a hero during\u00a0World War I.<\/p>\n

Although the film credits state that the characters in the film are\u00a0fictitious, the film follows the actual actions of the\u00a0dog and includes real people involved in his story.<\/p>\n

In the film he is adopted by,\u00a0or rather\u00a0adopts, Robert Conroy, a young U.S. Army\u00a0doughboy in the\u00a026th Yankee\u00a0Division. Given the name Stubby, the dog makes it aboard the\u00a0the SS Minnesota with the troops and, by the time they\u00a0disembark\u00a0in France, Stubby is the 102nd Infantry’s unofficial mascot.<\/p>\n

Col.\u00a0Parker\u00a0gave special orders that Stubby remain with the 26th in France throughout the war. It\u00a0was said the dog\u00a0“was the only member of his regiment that could talk back to Parker\u00a0and get away with it.”<\/p>\n

The 26th Yankee\u00a0Division took part in four major offensives \u2014 Aisne-Marne, Champagne-Marne, Saint-Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne \u2014 and 17 engagements. They saw more fighting than any other American infantry division and Stubby was there for the duration.<\/p>\n

Much of what is shown on screen actually happened making Sgt. Stubby a bit of an animated history lesson. But\u00a0don’t let that put you off.<\/p>\n

Also, although it’s animated (suggesting\u00a0aimed at\u00a0kids)\u00a0this is not a “Disneyesque”. It shows\u00a0World War One, including trench warfare, bombings, shootings, gas attacks, etc. The main characters are constantly in danger, one even dies, as do lots of\u00a0background soldiers. So not your typical family movie.<\/p>\n

And while there are other too-good-to-be-true pooches in films, this one is actually real.He participated in 17 battles and trotted out of the conflict as a decorated vet. He lived until 1926, and is preserved in the\u00a0Smithsonian<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
