In June 1520, Henry VIII and King Francis I of France met a site in\u00a0Balinghem\u00a0near Calais at the ‘Field\u00a0of\u00a0Cloth of Gold’. It was an\u00a0attempt to strengthen the bond between the two countries following the Anglo-French treaty of 1514.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Field of the Cloth of Gold\u00a0got its name from the spectacular fabric,\u00a0cloth of gold, which\u00a0is\u00a0woven with strands of real\u00a0gold. Henry had a marquee made of\u00a0cloth of gold, and both kings used the meeting\u00a0as an\u00a0opportunity to show off their grandeur and riches. Each king tried to outshine the other, with dazzling tents and clothes, huge feasts, music,\u00a0jousting\u00a0and games.<\/p>\n

Field of Cloth of Gold 2020<\/h1>\n

To mark the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII’s legendary encounter with his great rival Fran\u00e7ois I of France, Hampton Court Palace is staging a season of events.<\/p>\n

In April 2020 Hampton Court will be staging a new exhibition called “Gold and Glory: Henry VIII and the French King”. It will\u00a0reunite works of art, gold, weapons, manuscripts and clothing from the actual historic event, as well as from the 16th-century English and French courts.<\/p>\n

Between\u00a023-31 May 2020 they will be staging a\u00a0Field of Cloth of Gold rematch with\u00a0jousting, wrestling and courtly dancing.\u00a0The Great Tudor Games take place during the\u00a0Summer holidays with more\u00a0wrestling and revelling. Get to\u00a0<\/span>experience falconry and to see Tudor cookery demonstrations.<\/p>\n
