The heart of contemporary British Politics\u00a0is a UNESCO\u00a0World Heritage Site.<\/h2>\n

The area around Westminster Abbey, the Palace of Westminster (more commonly known as the Houses of Parliament), and Parliament Square was designated as\u00a0 Conservation Area in 1987.\u00a0It is\u00a0listed as a\u00a0UNESCO\u00a0World Heritage Site in recognition of the outstanding universal architectural, historic and symbolic significance of this group of buildings and spaces.<\/p>\n

Parliament Square Gardens <\/a>is an English Heritage Grade II registered garden of Special Historic Interest and retains its\u00a0important\u00a0role in\u00a0Britain’s heritage as\u00a0part of\u00a0the ceremonial route between Westminster Abbey and Westminster Hall. The original design was by\u00a0Sir Charles Barry to provide the new Houses of Parliament with a better setting following the fire of 1834 which virtually destroyed the medieval Westminster Palace.\u00a0\u00a0Barry also designed the Houses of Parliament, which was expanded from the Westminster Palace\u00a0to include eight acres along the Thames. The resulting neo-Gothic buildings <\/a>were completed in 1852.\u00a0The Clock Tower, housing Big Ben, was finished in 1858 and\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the gardens were\u00a0laid out in 1868.<\/p>\n

Following significant bomb damage during the Second World War,\u00a0Grey Wornum <\/a>was commissioned to redesign the square as one central garden island. His design comprises a square lawn, paved walkways and formal paths, with seats on the northern and western edges.<\/p>\n
