Today the Queen will become the longest ever reigning monarch in British history. She will\u00a0pass the record set by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Telegraph reports that when Queen Victoria became the longest serving monarch,\u00a0surpassing the record held by her grandfather George III, her subjects marked the occasion with\u00a0memorabilia.\u00a0Everything from printed handkerchiefs to china plates bore the legend \u201cthe longest reign in history\u201d.\u00a0 <\/a>\u00a0Queen Victoria’s reign lasted 63 years and seven months and covered a period of significant\u00a0industrial, cultural and scientific changes. By contrast, Elizabeth II’s\u00a0reign has\u00a0 covered a period of significant\u00a0technological, cultural and scientific changes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Low key Monarch celebrations<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Telegraph <\/a>notes that, for\u00a0George III’s \u00a0Golden Jubilee\u00a0on October 25 1809, the King remained in seclusion at Windsor Castle, attending\u00a0a private\u00a0service in St George\u2019s Chapel. He later visited a nearby fete and fireworks display.\u00a0In London, the public celebrations were commemorated with a service of \u00a0thanksgiving\u00a0at St Paul\u2019s Cathedral, attended by the Lord Mayor and Corporation of London. Crowds\u00a0sang \u201cRule, Britannia\u201d and \u201cGod Save the King\u201d and there were crown-shaped decorations on the columns of the Mansion House. <\/span><\/p>\n

Queen Victoria spend the day she passed George III\u2019s record at Balmoral, entertaining the last Tsar and Tsarina of Russia. Similarly, Elizabeth II\u00a0plans to spend the morning opening a new railway line in the Borders before returning to Balmoral. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is an historic achievement to\u00a0become the longest reigning of the forty-one kings and queens of England since the Norman Conquest.<\/span><\/p>\n
