In Brixton graffiti was seen as a way to brighten the area rather than as a problem. Consequently, the council began commissioning street art. Brixton now has a lot of\u00a0art adorning it streets, which the London Mural Preservation Society maintains. Some is by international street artists, while other works are\u00a0by local community groups.<\/p>\n<h2>Now one of these works of art is becoming listed.<\/h2>\n<p>Lambeth Council has\u00a0confirmed that the mural of David Bowie, located in Tunstall Place, will be listed to ensure its protection.<\/p>\n<p>Lambeth Council\u00a0are also considering renaming the street name to honour the\u00a0local born music icon who died earlier this year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2989\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2989\" style=\"width: 1944px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2989\" src=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/dscn3299.jpg\" alt=\"David Bowie Mural in Brixton by Ian Thirkettle\" width=\"1944\" height=\"2592\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David Bowie Mural in Brixton : Photo by Ian Thirkettle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2016\/03\/22\/brixton-to-rename-street-after-david-bowie-as-his-mural-becomes-listed-5767713\/?ito=facebook\">Lambeth Council are reported<\/a> as stating: \u2018Lambeth council is set to locally list the David Bowie mural beside Morley\u2019s in Brixton that became a shrine to the artist who died in January. Local listing would protect the mural and the council is also considering renaming the area where the mural is in Tunstall Place. The council is in contact with Bowie\u2019s family about the many suggestions for a permanent memorial, including statues and place naming.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2>James Cochran<\/h2>\n<p>The Aladdin Sane-inspired mural was\u00a0painted by\u00a0James Cochran\u00a0in 2013 to coincide with the V&amp;A\u2019s \u201cDavid Bowie Is\u2026\u201d exhibition and the parallel \u201cMany Faces of David Bowie\u201d show at the Opera Gallery. James Cochran, or Jimmy C,\u00a0chose\u00a0Aladdin Sane\u00a0as it lent itself\u00a0to his \u201caerosol pointillism\u201d style \u2013 large pictures created using small dots of spray paint.<\/p>\n<p>Quoted in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/london\/bowie-mural-artist-im-so-honoured-to-see-people-using-my-work-as-a-shrine-a3154356.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Evening Standard<\/a>, Cochran said \u201cI\u00a0work on the street so I thought it would be logical to do something on the street. I\u2019ve always admired Bowie as an artist.\u00a0I love his music and his songwriting, and his lyrics were incredible poetry. I just had incredible respect for him as someone reinventing himself every decade with a fearless approach and non-stop output and creativity. He was an inspiration to me so I was happy to pay tribute to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Brixton Street Art<\/h2>\n<p>As well as the iconic Bowie mural on\u00a0the Morley\u2019s department store, opposite the Tube station, there is a wealth of street art to be discovered around the area.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Treasure Hunts in London\" href=\"http:\/\/www.treasure-hunts-in-london.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Treasure Hunts in London<\/a> organise the Street Art in Brixton Treasure Hunt. Blurring the lines between street and public art, this hunt features commissioned works and works by known graffiti artists.\u00a0The next\u00a0hunt is on Saturday 14 May 2016 at 2pm.
