Derby is part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.derwentvalleymills.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Derwent Valley Mills&nbsp;<\/a>and the surrounding landscape were inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001. They achieved international recognition as the valley&nbsp;<em>\u201csaw the birth of the factory system, when new types of building were erected to house new technology for spinning cotton. The need to provide housing and other facilities resulted in the creation of the first modern industrial settlements.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.files.wordpress.com\/2022\/04\/img_4090.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3380\"\/><figcaption>Pickford\u2019s House \u2013 photo by Juliamaud<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We began our visit to Derby at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.derbymuseums.org\/pickfords-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pickford\u2019s House<\/a>, the professional showcase and family home of Georgian architect Joseph Pickford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then we headed into town and the Derby Museum &amp; Art Gallery.&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.derbymuseums.org\/museum-and-art-gallery\/visit\/\" target=\"_blank\">Derby Museums<\/a>&nbsp;is home to the world\u2019s largest collection of art works by Joseph Wright of Derby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.files.wordpress.com\/2022\/04\/img_4092.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3382\"\/><figcaption>viewing works by artist Joseph Wright \u2013 photo by Juliamaud<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum also houses the \u201cNotice Nature Feel Joy\u201d gallery, which profiles nearly 2,000 specimens from their natural history collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.files.wordpress.com\/2022\/04\/img_4095.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3381\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Our final stop was the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.derbymuseums.org\/museum-of-making\/collections-galleries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Museum of Making<\/a>&nbsp;at Derby Silk Mill. This opened in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We took a well earned break at the River Kitchen, before heading around the museum. There is a viewing window on the top floor. Unfortunately you cannot get to the other side of the building from the view, as the space is hired out to creatives.
