When we say small, we mean it. Fordwich is the smallest town in Britain!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town boast two pubs \u2013 the George &amp; Dragon and Fordwich Arms, which has a Michelin star. We had a lovely lunch in the George &amp; Dragon before we went to explore the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/08\/dsc02584-1.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Fordwich - photo by Juliamaud\" class=\"wp-image-4565\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fordwich \u2013 photo by Juliamaud<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Town or Village?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So what is the difference between a Town and a Village?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To start with, a village is a small community in a rural area, whereas a town is a populated area with fixed boundaries and a local government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word Town comes from an Old English word that referred to a walled or fenced place, hence the modern word referring to populated areas with fixed boundaries and a local government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Towns are usually bigger than villages, but it would seem, this is not always the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fordwich is listed in the 1086&nbsp;Domesday Book&nbsp;as a small village. It grew throughout the Middle Ages as a port. In fact, all of the Caen stone, used by the Normans to rebuild&nbsp;Canterbury Cathedral&nbsp;in the 12th and 13th centuries, was landed there. Fordwich later became a limb of the&nbsp;Cinque Ports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c<em>Fordwich was first recorded in 675 AD. Its name means simply a settlement by a ford. It became a burgh, or designated town, during the Saxon era. Henry III granted Fordwich a borough charter.<\/em>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britainexpress.com\/attractions.htm?attraction=2902\">https:\/\/www.britainexpress.com\/attractions.htm?attraction=2902<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Losing its status as a town in 1886, this was reinstated in 1974.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Town Hall<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The tudor-style&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fordwich_Town_Hall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fordwich Town Hall<\/a>&nbsp;dates back to the early 15th century and was rebuilt in or shortly before 1544. An earlier building on the site was repaired in 1474.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/08\/dsc02580.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Fordwich Town Hall - photo by Juliamaud\" class=\"wp-image-4561\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fordwich Town Hall \u2013 photo by Juliamaud<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An ancient church<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Church_of_St_Mary_the_Virgin,_Fordwich\" target=\"_blank\">The&nbsp;Church of St Mary the Virgin<\/a>, a grade 1 listed building, is near the town hall. The north aisle contains part of a carved sarcophagus reputed to be a shrine of&nbsp;St Augustine of Canterbury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/08\/dsc02582.jpg?w=683\" alt=\"The Church of St Mary the Virgin - photo by Juliamaud\" class=\"wp-image-4579\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Church of St Mary the Virgin \u2013 photo by Juliamaud<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other things to see<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The 16th-century building, now known as Watergate House, was the family home of John and&nbsp;Gregory Blaxland, early 19th-century pioneers of Australia.
