The D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum in Eastwood<\/h3>\n

Located in the house where he was born in 1885, the exhibition has been laid out in the style of a late 19th-century working class miner\u2019s house.\u00a0The museum\u00a0extends to the house next door which\u00a0houses a short film, a small exhibition of his memorabilia\u00a0and the gift shop.<\/p>\n

The exhibition includes Lawrence\u2019s original gravestone. Yes, weird, I know.<\/p>\n

When he died on 2 March 1930\u00a0in\u00a0France\u00a0from complications of tuberculosis, his wife, Frieda commissioned an elaborate headstone for his grave. It bears\u00a0a mosaic of his adopted emblem of the\u00a0phoenix and was originally atop his grave.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0in 1935\u00a0Angelo Ravagli, who\u00a0Frieda lived with and later married,\u00a0arranged to have Lawrence’s body exhumed. The headstone was removed and passed through various owners<\/a> until it was presented to the D.H.\u00a0 Lawrence Heritage in\u00a02008.<\/p>\n

Lawrence’s body, however, was to be\u00a0cremated so his ashes could be brought\u00a0to the ranch in\u00a0Taos, New Mexico where Frieda and Angelo lived. However, according to the museum the ashes never arrived at the ranch. Rumour has it that Angelo dumped the ashes en route and had to buy\u00a0alternative ashes to take to\u00a0Taos.<\/p>\n

I think the moral here is don’t trust your lover with your dead husband’s body.<\/p>\n
