He now stands with a commanding view overlooking the Houses of Parliament. The\u00a0<a title=\"Winston Churchill\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Statue_of_Winston_Churchill,_Parliament_Square\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bronze statue by Ivor Roberts-Jones<\/a>, is 12 feet (3.7\u00a0m) high and stands on a granite pedestal . The\u00a08 feet (2.4\u00a0m) tall bronze statue\u00a0of\u00a0David Lloyd George is\u00a0on a granite pedestal with a Welsh slate plinth. Queen Victoria created the\u00a0Earldom of Beaconsfield and the\u00a0statue commemorates Benjamin Disraeli. He was Prime Minister twice, the longer term from 1874 &#8211; 1880. He remained Prime Minister, even\u00a0after becoming \u00a0an Earl, by explaining government policy from the House of Lords. The bronze statue on a granite pedestal, by sculptor Mario Raggi,\u00a0was unveiled on <span class=\"sorttext\">19 April 1883. The bronze statue, by the sculptor Matthew Noble, is on a granite pedestal and the bronze reliefs around the pedestal, depicting scenes from his life, were\u00a0by\u00a0Horace Montford. It was unveiled on <span class=\"sorttext\">11 July 1874. <\/span>He is one of only four British Prime Ministers to have three or more separate periods in office, although\u00a0his ministries all lasted less than two years, and totalled 3 years 280 days. His main achievement was the passing of the Reform Act which doubled the number of working men eligible to vote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_1688\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1688\" style=\"width: 168px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/canning.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1688\" src=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/canning.jpg?w=168\" alt=\"George Canning\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/canning.jpg 819w, https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/canning-168x300.jpg 168w, https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/canning-575x1024.jpg 575w, https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/canning-768x1368.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 168px) 100vw, 168px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">George Canning<br \/>Foreign Secretary 1807\u20131809 and 1822\u20131827; Prime Minister 1827<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>George Canning (1770 \u2013 1827)<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p><a title=\"George Canning\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Canning#Prime_Minister:_1827\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Canning<\/a> was briefly chosen as\u00a0Prime Minister by George IV after\u00a0 Lord\u00a0Liverpool suffered a severe stroke. Neither the Duke of Wellington\u00a0nor Sir Robert Peel agreed to serve under Canning, causing the\u00a0Tory party to\u00a0split between Peel and Wellington&#8217;s\u00a0Ultra-Tories and\u00a0the Canningites.\u00a0Canning&#8217;s total period in office remains the shortest of any Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, a mere 119 days. It was unveiled on <span class=\"sorttext\">2 February 1876. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"sorttext\">Palmerston served in government as both a Whip and a Conservative and spent nearly 58 years in high office. Serving as Prime Minister\u00a01855-1858 and 1859 &#8211; 1865,\u00a0he is the only Prime Minister to be over 70 years old at the beginning of his first term and is the most recent British Prime Minister to die in office. At the general election of January 1835, Peel issued his statement of policy, the Tamworth Manifesto. This document is often seen as the basis on which the modern Conservative Party was founded. Historian A.J.P. Taylor says: <a title=\"peel as prime minister\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Peel#First_term_as_prime_minister_.281834.E2.80.931835.29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peel was in the first rank of 19th century statesman<\/a>&#8230;he created the modern Conservative Party on the ruins of the old Toryism.
