While today it is best known as the stunning home of Disney\u2019s&nbsp;<em>The Lion King<\/em>, its past is even more spectacular than any stage production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Have you been on a tour of the Lyceum Theatre in London?\" width=\"563\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c-RC9UeMdxE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A History of Reinvention<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The site\u2019s theatrical story began as early as 1765, but the Lyceum as we know it today, with its imposing columned portico, opened in 1834 after the previous structure was destroyed by fire. In its earliest lives, the venue was a true jack-of-all-trades:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It housed the first London exhibition of Madame Tussauds waxworks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It served as the English Opera House, championing British composers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The notorious Sublime Society of Beef Steaks, a bizarre and exclusive dining club for the artistic elite, met here for decades.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Golden Age of Henry Irving<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The theatre truly attained legendary status during the Victorian era, particularly from 1871 to 1902, under the management of the great actor-manager, Sir Henry Irving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Irving, along with his celebrated co-star Ellen Terry, made the Lyceum the pre-eminent stage for Shakespearean productions and grand melodramas. The theatre became known for its sheer spectacle and was considered by many to be the unofficial \u201cNational Theatre.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his two decades at the Lyceum, Irving\u2019s business manager was none other than Bram Stoker. The actor\u2019s dramatic, commanding presence is widely believed to have been the primary inspiration for Stoker\u2019s iconic novel,&nbsp;<em>Dracula<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Near Demolition to Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll Royalty<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The 20th century saw the Lyceum nearly meet a tragic end. After decades of popular Christmas pantomimes, it was closed in 1939 and narrowly escaped demolition for a road improvement scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a dramatic twist of fate, it was reborn in 1951 as the Lyceum Ballroom, transforming into one of London\u2019s most famous concert and dance venues. For decades, the beautiful Rococo auditorium thundered with a different kind of sound. This era saw rock legends grace its stage, with performances from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Rolling Stones<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Who<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Led Zeppelin<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Clash<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bob Marley and the Wailers<\/strong>\u00a0(who recorded their seminal\u00a0<em>Live!<\/em>\u00a0album here in 1975).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Today: A West End Masterpiece<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After closing as a ballroom in 1986 and undergoing a meticulous, decade-long restoration, the Lyceum was returned to its original theatrical glory in 1996.<sup><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 1999, it has housed one of the most successful shows in theatre history \u2013 Disney\u2019s The Lion King.
