Before the late 16th century, London\u2019s theater scene was a nomadic one. Actors performed wherever they could\u2014inn courtyards, college halls, and private homes. That changed in 1576 when James Burbage<\/strong> and John Brayne<\/strong> built “The Theatre” in Shoreditch, London\u2019s first purpose-built playhouse. By the 1580s, a rising star named William Shakespeare<\/strong> had joined the resident troupe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, these early theaters weren’t just for high art. They were rowdy hubs for gambling and bear-baiting, attracting crowds of up to 3,000 people. The resulting “vice”\u2014drinking, brawling, and petty crime\u2014angered the Church and City officials. In 1596, the authorities finally snapped, banning all public plays within the City limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Great Timber Heist<\/strong> Facing a lease dispute in Shoreditch and a ban in the City, the company took a bold risk. In late 1598, they literally dismantled “The Theatre” piece by piece, ferried the timber across the Thames to Southwark, and used it to build a brand-new playhouse: The Globe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire and Finality<\/strong> The Globe became the crown jewel of London theater, but its thatched roof proved a liability. During a 1613 performance of Henry VIII<\/em>, a stage cannon ignited the straw, burning the theater to the ground. Though it was rebuilt with a safer tiled roof, the end came in 1642. The Puritan administration, viewing theaters as dens of sin, ordered them all closed. By 1644, the legendary Globe was demolished, marking the end of an era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
