{"id":1526,"date":"2019-12-06T09:07:05","date_gmt":"2019-12-06T09:07:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1526"},"modified":"2019-12-06T09:07:05","modified_gmt":"2019-12-06T09:07:05","slug":"christmas-lights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1526","title":{"rendered":"Christmas lights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following on from our\u00a0 tour of\u00a0<span style=\"color:var(--color-text);\">Christmas markets along the south coast, <\/span><span style=\"color:var(--color-text);\">the City Adventurers decided to explore some of the festive displays in London. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:var(--color-text);\">We started by visiting the Leicester Square Christmas Market. <\/span>This traditional Christmas market is held in the centre of <span style=\"color:var(--color-text);\">Leicester Square. With lights hanging down from the trees, it takes on a magical air. It has a number of <\/span><span style=\"color:var(--color-text);\">Bavarian-style wooden huts<\/span><span style=\"color:var(--color-text);\">\u00a0offering an array of goods. photo by Juliamaud\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Regent Street is marking the 200<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the creation of Regent Street itself with the return of The Spirit Of Christmas Lights. The suspended spirits are inspired by Regent Street\u2019s Christmas lights in 1954.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1571\" src=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/img_2497.jpg\" alt=\"\u2018The Spirit of Christmas\u2019 - photo by Juliamaud\" width=\"3648\" height=\"2736\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We made our way up Regents Street towards Hamleys and looked at their Christmas windows. They feature a snowy alpine scene populated with TY toys. Traditional scenes of characters with a Christmas tree, enjoying Christmas dinner etc make for an enchanting display. We were even treated to a show by dancing elves outside the stores entrance.<\/p>\n<p>We reached Oxford Circus and made our way along Oxford Street towards Selfridges.<\/p>\n<p>Oxford Street has brand new lights &#8211; 27 &#8216;LED light curtains&#8217; hanging above the street, made of 220,000 individual lights. They have falling snow flakes displayed on them and festive messages and are 90% more energy efficient than traditional Christmas lights. Unfortunately they are also difficult to photograph.<\/p>\n<p>There are still traditional lights threaded through the trees.<\/p>\n<p>And so we arrived at Selfridges. I remember visiting Selfridges\u00a0as a child and the wonderful displays they had in their windows. Unfortunately this year was disappointing.<\/p>\n<p>Bobbie Tree, Selfridges Design Manager, has gone for &#8220;Future Fantasy &#8211; A Christmas for Modern Times&#8221;. His aim was to &#8220;rethink beloved festive stories, re-telling them through a modern lens. This is a next generation Christmas&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I must say I wasn&#8217;t impressed.
