Britain\u2019s great military victory\u00a0ended the\u00a0reign of Napoleon Bonaparte\u00a0 and was one of the most decisive battles in the history of Europe. It was fought by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trabel.com\/waterloo\/waterloo-thebattle.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">191,300 soldiers <\/a>&#8211; Wellington&#8217;s army had 67,000 soldiers, Bl\u00fccher&#8217;s army 52,300 and Napoleon&#8217;s army 72,000. During the battle a total of 48,500 men fell or were severely wounded.<\/p>\n<p>Yet 200 years after the Battle of Waterloo,\u00a0there was no memorial on the site to commemorate the British troops. By contrast the site boasts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trabel.com\/waterloo\/waterloo-monuments.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Wounded Eagle memorial<\/a>, dedicated to the last soldiers of Napoleon&#8217;s Grand Army, and\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.trabel.com\/waterloo\/waterloo-monuments.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Hannover Monument<\/a>, erected in honour of the Soldiers of the city of Hannover. The only monument to a Briton is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trabel.com\/waterloo\/waterloo-monuments.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Gordon Monument <\/a>, opposite the Hannover Monument. Photo of stone with explantion of battle.<\/p>\n<h2>Waterloo remembered\u00a0in London<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">At Waterloo Station in London there is a new memorial to the\u00a024,000 allied soldiers (British, Prussian, Dutch and Hanoverian soldiers) killed in the Battle of Waterloo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The unveiling ceremony in London by the current Duke of Wellington, Charles Wellesley,\u00a0\u00a0took place on 10th June 2015.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-3075909\/New-landmark-remembering-24-000-allied-soldiers-died-200-years-ago-Waterloo-unveiled-station-named-battle.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daily Mail <\/a>the memorial is\u00a0a large replica of the reverse of the Waterloo Campaign medal &#8211; the first medal to be given to every solider in a battle regardless of their rank\u00a0 &#8211; made in solid bronze by the London Mint Office and the artist Jason Brooks.\u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2015\/05\/10\/20\/28893BA700000578-3075909-image-m-29_1431284919536.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Waterloo Memorial <\/a>features Nike, the Greek goddess of victory\u00a0and has a &#8220;tribute to the fallen soldiers carved in granite, along with the Duke of Wellington&#8217;s words: &#8216;My heart is broken by the terrible loss I have sustained in my old friends and companions and my poor soldiers. Believe me, nothing except a battle lost can be half so melancholy as a battle won.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-3075909\/New-landmark-remembering-24-000-allied-soldiers-died-200-years-ago-Waterloo-unveiled-station-named-battle.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sir Evelyn Webb-Carter <\/a>told the Daily Mail\u00a0&#8216;With the 200th anniversary of the Battle this year, it seems only right that these brave soldiers should be commemorated with a plaque in the form of a giant medal that reflects the huge sacrifice that they made.\u00a0Not only that, it is at a place that will forever be linked in people&#8217;s minds to the Battle \u2013 Waterloo Station \u2013 to ensure that they will never be forgotten.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Wellington&#8217;s heroes remembered\u00a0in Belgium<\/h2>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2014\/12\/20\/24204EF300000578-2882154-image-a-10_1419117293525.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Waterloo monument<\/a>, designed by sculptress Vivien Mallock, was also unveiled\u00a0on the battlefield in Belgium\u00a0in 2015. The unveiling was conducted by Prince Charles at a ceremony\u00a0on 17th June 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Prince Charles,\u00a0the Duchess of Cornwall and\u00a0Princess Astrid of Belgium\u00a0toured Hougoumont, which has recently undergone a \u00a33m project to restore it following years of neglect. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-33160368\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The new memorial <\/a>standing just over 6ft high,\u00a0features two life-size British soldiers\u00a0struggling to close the north gates of the farm at Hougoumont\u00a0during the attack by the French.\u00a0The defence of the farm was so strategically important that Wellington later said the outcome of Waterloo &#8220;turned on the closing of the gates at Hougoumont&#8221;. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2882154\/Wellington-s-heroes-finally-win-Waterloo-memorial-Belgian-battlefield-100-years-French-got-one.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The new memorial <\/a>also features\u00a0quotes from the Duke of Wellington.\u00a0One reads \u2018Next to a battle lost the greatest misery is a battle gained\u2019, while the\u00a0other says \u2018Never was a place more fiercely assaulted nor better defended\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2882154\/Wellington-s-heroes-finally-win-Waterloo-memorial-Belgian-battlefield-100-years-French-got-one.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barry Van Danzig told the Daily Mail<\/a>, \u2018It is now 200 years since the Battle of Waterloo and there are monuments on the field to the Prussians, the French, the Dutch and the Hanoverians. In fact, every nation that was there is commemorated except the British.
