It has many elegant Regency houses but its architectural jewel is the Minster, boasting some of the best medieval stone carving in England.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2382\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2382\" style=\"width: 3648px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2382\" src=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/dsc00391-e1594577316188.jpg\" alt=\"Southwell Minster - photo by Juliamaud\" width=\"3648\" height=\"3947\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2382\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Southwell Minster &#8211; photo by Juliamaud<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Southwell Minster<\/h3>\n<p>Southwell Minster is Nottinghamshire&#8217;s cathedral. It became a cathedral in 1884.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest church on the site is believed to have been founded in 627 by Paulinus, the first Archbishop of York, when he visited the area while baptising believers in the River Trent.<\/p>\n<p>The cathedral provides examples of Norman and early English architecture. The latter is very evident in the 13th century Chapter House. The Minster features some of the finest examples of naturalistic carvings in the country &#8211; the Leaves of Southwell.<\/p>\n<p><em>The fluid carvings of plants, animals and green men found within the Chapter House \u2013 known collectively as \u2018The Leaves of Southwell\u2019 \u2013 are of quite exceptional quality.
