Agnes Maclehose or Agnes Craig, was known to her friends as &#8216;Nancy&#8217;. Burns wrote &#8216;Ae fond kiss&#8217;, refering to &#8220;Nancy&#8221; in the poem, after their final meeting\u00a0on 6 December 1791 and\u00a0sent\u00a0the poem\u00a0to her before she departed\u00a0to be with her estranged husband in Jamaica.\u00a0 She outlived him by 45 years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Agnes was\u00a0a competent poetess when she met\u00a0Robert Burns\u00a0at a tea-party given by Miss Erskine Nimmo.\u00a0She was immediately\u00a0 attracted to him and they began to\u00a0correspond regularly\u00a0using the\u00a0pseudonyms &#8216;Clarinda&#8217; and &#8216;Sylvander&#8217;.
