These world famous lights stretch for six miles along the promenade, a bit like Christmas lights but in the autumn. We&#8217;d wrongly assumed that the special illuminated trams were like hop-on-hop-off buses so were surprised that, when the cab dropped us as a tram stop, it was only for ordinary trams. Turns out you can only board an illuminated tram at the\u00a0Heritage Tram stop by the Pleasure Beach.<\/p>\n<p>No matter.\u00a0We could still enjoy the lights, which stretch along the promenade past all three piers and Blackpool Tower, by walking along the promenade.<\/p>\n<p>We set off towards the central section of seafront and Central Pier. Light shows are projected onto the building, and the tower itself\u00a0lights up from it\u2019s top to toe.\u00a0At 518 feet tall, it uses 25,000 LEDs and can be seen for miles around.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-446\" style=\"background-color:initial;text-align:center;\" src=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/img_0478.jpg\" alt=\"Blackpool Tower - photo by Juliamaud\" width=\"3648\" height=\"2736\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Blackpool Tower &#8211; photo by Juliamaud<\/p>\n<p>After a stop for dinner, we continued our on our way past the North pier. The lights, unfortunately, petered out. With a large section of darkness ahead of us, we turned back towards the centre. However, looking behind us, we noticed that there appeared to be lights further along the bay.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve never been, it&#8217;s worth a quick visit.<\/p>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p>The illuminations were originally founded in 1879.\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblackpoolilluminations.info\/history\/history-of-the-illuminations\/a-quick-history-of-the-illuminations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first Switch On Ceremony<\/a> was not until 1934. It was performed by Lord Derby when he\u2019d been made a Freeman of the Borough of Blackpool.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblackpoolilluminations.info\/history\/heritage-trams\/old-heritage-illuminated-trams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first illuminated trams <\/a>were used in 1897 with five tram cars decorated with patriotic slogans to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Now three\u00a0Illuminated Heritage Trams run throughout the Illuminations season.\u00a0The HMS Blackpool Tram is based on the Royal Navy Frigate of the same name, plus The Western Train and The Fisherman\u2019s Friend Trawler Tram.
