Why do we eat turkey on Christmas Day?<\/h1>\n

Approximately 10 million turkeys are eaten in the UK every year with\u00a087 per cent of people choosing to serve\u00a0traditional roast turkey at Christmas.<\/p>\n

Turkeys were first introduced to\u00a0Britain from America over\u00a0500 years ago.\u00a0Henry VIII was the first British King to enjoy turkey in the 16th century, although it was Edward VII who made eating turkey at Christmas fashionable.<\/p>\n

However, it took until the 1950’s for the bird to be served by most families. Prior to that it was widely considered a luxury. For example, the Express <\/a>notes that in the 1930s the average person had to work for a week to be able to buy a turkey.<\/p>\n

In many\u00a0other European countries, turkey is not a traditional Christmas meal. For example \u00a0Germans serve\u00a0wild boar or venison.\u00a0In Portugal, the typical Christmas dinner\u00a0is codfish. Similarly,\u00a0in Sweden cooked and raw fish is served, as well as caviar and shellfish.<\/p>\n
