The celebrations, which began\u00a0at the end of the 18th century, include\u00a0the traditional Scottish dish and\u00a0drink \u2013 Haggis and Scotch Whiskey \u2013 \u00a0and\u00a0recitations of Burns\u2019s poetry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"entry-title\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Burns night - Addressing of the haggis HD\" width=\"748\" height=\"421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7l9xfRxlxYE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div id=\"txt_8\">\n<p>Robert Burns often went\u00a0to Edinburgh\u00a0where he established a platonic relationship with Mrs Agnes Maclehose.<\/p>\n<p>Agnes was\u00a0a competent poetess when she met\u00a0Robert Burns\u00a0at a tea-party given by Miss Erskine Nimmo.\u00a0She was immediately\u00a0 attracted to him and they began to\u00a0correspond regularly\u00a0using the\u00a0pseudonyms \u2018Clarinda\u2019 and \u2018Sylvander\u2019. Sir Walter Scott referred to the resulting <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agnes_Maclehose#cite_note-H-14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">love letters <\/a>that passed between Burns and Maclehose as <i>\u201cthe most extraordinary mixture of sense and nonsense, and of love human and divine, that was ever exposed to the eye of the world\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Agnes was known to her friends as \u2018Nancy\u2019.
