He\u00a0made distinctions between three forms of love which are key to the human experience.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eros is a form of love that is closely associated with desire.<\/li>\n<li>Philia is the love experienced between very good friends or family.<\/li>\n<li>Agape is unconditional love, understanding and goodwill.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2643\" src=\"https:\/\/invitation2events.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/02\/img_6078.jpg\" alt=\"Heart of locks by Juliamaud\" width=\"2736\" height=\"3648\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Romantic Love?<\/h2>\n<p>Romantic love changes over time.\u00a0The idea that people fall in love,\u00a0as seen in romantic stories and fairy-tales,\u00a0begins as the Eros form of desire. It has been argued that the overwhelming desire at the start of a relationship\u00a0is lust not love.<\/p>\n<p>The love grows later, after the lust has waned. Psychiatrist and writer <a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/M._Scott_Peck\">M Scott Peck<\/a>\u00a0describes this love as the love that\u00a0nurtures the other person.\u00a0To\u00a0really love someone, we must be willing to accept that person as they truly are.<\/p>\n<p>As <a class=\"tone-colour\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/profile\/linda-blair\" rel=\"author\">Linda Blair<\/a>\u00a0notes, this \u00a0acceptance is where some of the hurt comes in when we love. It requires incredible effort to accept and to understand another person, especially when both individuals concerned are\u00a0growing and changing.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you grow and change together, it can also physically hurt to be apart. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologicalscience.org\/observer\/why-love-literally-hurts#.WH4QylPc6po\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Jaffee<\/a> recalls &#8220;Old couples frequently make the news because they can\u2019t <em>physically<\/em> survive without one another. In one example from early 2012, Marjorie and James Landis of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, who\u2019d been married for 65 years, died just 88 minutes apart.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>The course of true love<\/h2>\n<p>According to William Shakespeare &#8220;The course of true love never did run smooth&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>And so it would appear in the collection held at The Wallace Collection.
