Grande Dame of Archeology<\/h2>\n

Mary Leakey was born on February 6, 1913, in London, England. She was a paleoanthropologist who is best known for making several prominent archaeological and anthropological discoveries in the 20th century.<\/p>\n

Mary met her husband,\u00a0archaeologist\/anthropologist Louis S.B. Leakey, when she was\u00a0asked to illustrate his book Adam’s Ancestors<\/em> (1934).\u00a0They married in 1937 and formed one of science’s most well-known husband-wife teams. She continued working after her husband’s death in 1972 becoming director of excavations at Olduvai.\u00a0She died in Kenya in 1996.<\/p>\n

Discovery<\/h2>\n

She discovered the fossilized Proconsul <\/em>skull, an extinct ape which is now believed to be ancestral to humans. The fossil, believed to be more than 18 million years old, was the first species of the primate genus to be discovered from the Miocene era.<\/p>\n

She also discovered the\u00a0Zinjanthropus skull at Olduvai Gorge, and in 1979, she discovered a trail of early human footprints at Laetoli.<\/p>\n
