Antarctica<\/span><\/h2>\n

Antarctica is the world’s fifth largest continent covering an area of around 14 million square kilometres that are virtually untouched by humankind.\u00a0Much of it is blanketed by a vast permanent ice sheet, averaging 2,000 metres in thickness. The South Pole is the southernmost point on the surface of the Earth. It is\u00a0also known as the Geographic South Pole or Terrestrial South Pole.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The US Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station has been permanently staffed there since it was\u00a0established in\u00a01956.\u00a0It is named after <\/b>the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen<\/a>\u00a0who led the first successful\u00a0expedition to the South Pole.\u00a0He and four others arrived at the pole on 14\u00a0December 1911, five weeks ahead of the\u00a0British expedition\u00a0led by Robert Falcon Scott<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Terra Nova Expedition<\/span><\/h2>\n

The British Antarctic Expedition, also called\u00a0the Terra Nova Expedition,\u00a0took place between 1910 and 1913. It was led by Robert Falcon Scott who wanted to\u00a0continue the work he had begun in\u00a0Antarctica between 1901\u201304. Aiming to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole, he and four companions\u00a0reached the pole on 17 January 1912, 32 days after Roald Amundsen. Scott’s entire party died on their return journey from the pole.<\/span><\/p>\n

Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition<\/span><\/h2>\n

Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton chose to explore the region by\u00a0crossing of Antarctica from sea to sea, via the pole. His Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition<\/a>\u00a0from 1914\u201317 hit disaster when his\u00a0ship, Endurance<\/i>, became trapped in pack ice and was slowly crushed.\u00a0The crew escaped by camping on the sea ice until it disintegrated, then launching the lifeboats to ultimately reach South Georgia<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
