The South Pole is the southernmost point on the surface of the Earth. It is\u00a0also known as the Geographic South Pole or Terrestrial South Pole.<\/span><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"time\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10293\" src=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/antarctica_6400px_from_blue_marble.jpg\" alt=\"Antarctica 6400px from Blue Marble.jpg\" width=\"6400\" height=\"6400\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"time\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">The US Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station has been permanently staffed there since it was\u00a0established in\u00a01956.\u00a0It is named after<b> <\/b>the Norwegian explorer <a style=\"color:#0000ff;\" title=\"Roald Amundsen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roald_Amundsen\">Roald Amundsen<\/a>\u00a0who led the first successful\u00a0expedition to the South Pole.\u00a0He and four others arrived at the pole on 14\u00a0December 1911, five weeks ahead of the\u00a0British expedition\u00a0led by <a style=\"color:#0000ff;\" title=\"Robert Falcon Scott\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Falcon_Scott\">Robert Falcon Scott<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10296\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10296\" style=\"width: 548px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10296\" src=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/portrett_av_roald_amundsen_crop.jpg\" alt=\"Roald Amundsen\" width=\"548\" height=\"752\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/portrett_av_roald_amundsen_crop.jpg 548w, https:\/\/cityadventurers.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/portrett_av_roald_amundsen_crop-219x300.jpg 219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 548px) 100vw, 548px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10296\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Roald Amundsen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"time\"><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">Terra Nova Expedition<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">The British Antarctic Expedition, also called\u00a0the Terra Nova Expedition,\u00a0took place between 1910 and 1913. It was led by Robert Falcon Scott who wanted to\u00a0continue the work he had begun in\u00a0Antarctica between 1901\u201304. Aiming to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole, he and four companions\u00a0reached the pole on 17 January 1912, 32 days after Roald Amundsen. The other point where the earth&#8217;s axis of rotation intersects its surface\u00a0is the\u00a0Geographic North Pole. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\">The Ceremonial South Pole is an area set aside for photo opportunities at the South Pole Station.
