The word Advent comes from the Latin word “adventus”, meaning “coming”. Advent is the four-week period beginning on the Sunday nearest the feast day of St. Andrew (November 30). Advent calendars, however, begin on December 1 and mark the 24 days before Christmas. They originated in Germany in the late 19th century and spread throughout Europe and North America. Originally, the images in Advent calendars were derived from the Old Testament.
