The May Fayre
Samuel Pepys first saw Mr Punch in England on 9 May 1662, recording the event in his diary. Consequently 9th May is taken as Punch’s birthday and is celebrated with a birthday toast to Mr Punch at the May Fayre.
40th anniversary
The annual Covent Garden May Fayre & Puppet Festival takes place on the second Sunday in May. This year it takes place at St Paul’s Church Garden in Bedford Street on 10th May 2015 and celebrates its 40th anniversary.
Puppeteers come to perform from all over England. The day begins with a brass band led procession.Mr Punch takes pride of place in the pulpit during the special church service at noon. Puppet shows and workshops follow, along with folk music, maypole dancing and clowns. This year’s Covent Garden May Fayre is called the Alternative Arts Puppet Festival
St Paul’s Church Covent Garden
Known as the Actor’s Church, St Paul’s Church was designed by Inigo Jones. Built in the 17th century, it was the first new church to be built in London after the Reformation.
