Marble Hill House

Marble Hill House is one of the finest surviving examples of early 18th century architecture and landscaping in England. It was owned by Henrietta Howard, an influential figure in early Georgian London.

Henrietta was born into the Hobart family of Norfolk. Orphaned at a young age (12), she married the dissolute Charles Howard, the youngest son of the 5th Earl of Suffolk. Yet, this marriage opened doors for Henrietta. Introduced to the Hanoverian court, she later became the mistress of the Prince of Wales, who would become King George II. It was during this time at court that she embarked on the construction of Marble Hill, a Thames-side residence in Twickenham.

Marble Hill wasn’t just a house; it became a vibrant hub. Henrietta cultivated a circle of influential friends – prominent politicians and sharp satirists like Jonathan Swift, Alexander Pope, and Horace Walpole. Together, they engaged in lively discussions on culture, ideas, and politics.

Visiting Marble Hill

The City Adventurers were lucky enough to have a guided tour of Marble Hill House, owned by English Heritage.

The interior of the house gives a glimpse of Georgian life with displays that tell the story of Henrietta Howard, Marble Hill’s remarkable owner.

The grounds, that lead down to the river, include restored gardens a grotto and parkland. Marble Hill became a public park in 1902, after a campaign to protect the land from development and save the famous view from Richmond Hill. It is the only English landscape view protected by Act of Parliament. There is even a small ferry nearby to take you across the Thames.

The house is open to the public to visit for free from Wednesday to Sunday from April to October. For more details visit https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/marble-hill/
