Nostell is one of the great treasure houses of the north of England.
This Georgian house, near Wakefield, is also known as Nostell Priory as an Augustinian priory stood on the site from the early 12th century. Dedicated to St Oswald, it flourished for over 400 years until it was surrendered to Henry VIII in 1540 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The current house was never used as a priory. In fact some of the old priory timbers were used to construct the current house before being demolished.
The major remake of the Forsyte Saga was filmed in Nostell in 2002.
House
The City Adventurers explored Nostell, which is owned by the National Trust. It has beautiful ceilings throughout the building. There is also some very interestingly art work, including a fasinating family painting of Sir Thomas More and his Family. Helpful guides were happy to explain the collection as we moved around the building.
Created an ambitious statement by the Winn family in the 18th century, the house showcases interiors by Robert Adam, a world-class Thomas Chippendale collection, a rare 18th century dolls’ house, an exquisite painting of Sir Thomas More and his family, one of the first longcase clocks made by the famous inventor, John Harrison and the intricately decorated Hongs punch bowl.
