The supernatural thriller smash hit 2:22 A Ghost Story is coming to the end of its run at the Gielgud theatre, following five record-breaking seasons at various theatres around London’s West End.
2:22 A Ghost Story was an instant theatre sensation and has become a modern classic. Nominated for three Olivier Awards in 2022, it won three WhatsOnStage Awards, including Best New Play. Written by Danny Robins, this is a gripping supernatural thriller, interspersed with comedy.
So what happens in 2:22 A Ghost Story?
Well, it’s a scary ghost story about a woman who believes her new home is haunted.
Jenny and her husband, Sam, have just moved into their new place and started refurbishing it. However, she can hear strange noises every night at 2:22 a.m. Could this be the ghost of a former resident? The husband does not believe in ghosts, so he is not convinced.
Jenny is determined to find out the truth and protect their baby from (possibly malevolent) spirits. She sees her chance when the couple host a dinner party for their friends, Lauren and Ben. The two couples agree to stay up until 2:22 a.m. to see if any of them can hear the strange noises too……
The City adventurers went to see the play with its current stars, Donna Air as Lauren, James Buckley as Ben, Joe McFadden as Sam, and Stacey Dooley as Jenny. The acting was superb and the show very atmospheric. It is also brilliantly funny as secrets emerge over dinner.
Is it scary?
I’d like to say it all depends on whether you believe in ghosts. But really most of the scares are due to the way it is staged. We were not expecting so many jump scares in the first act, which takes place throughout the evening, well before the dreaded 2.22am
Did we dare to stay to 2.22 and discover the truth?
Yes we did. And like the mousetrap we are sworn to secrecy.
