The Russell Cotes museum and art gallery

Bet you can’t guess what is inside the Russell Cotes museum and art gallery. The City Adventurers went exploring.

The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum is an historic house and art gallery on Bournemouth’s East Cliff. Sir Merton Russell-Cotes gave the house, called East Cliff Hall, to his wife Annie for her 66th birthday. The couple filled the place with beautiful objects from their travels across the world, as well as their collection of British art.

In 1907, Annie and Merton announced their intention of donating East Cliff Hall, its contents and art collection ‘for the enjoyment of the public of Bournemouth and visitors to the town’. The house remained home to the couple until their deaths, but was opened to the public one day a month.

The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum formally opened to the public on 10 March 1922.

The venue operated as a museum until 2000, when it gained major Heritage Lottery funding to transform into an historic house and home. Where possible, original decoration was restored and the rooms were styled as they were in 1907, using historic photographs as a guide.
