Christopher Wren was born on 20th October 1632 in East Knoyle, Wiltshire. He became a mathematician and scientist but is perhaps best known as an architect. After the Great Fire of London in 1666,Christopher Wren came up with plans to rebuild the city. He designed 51 new city churches, as well as the new St Paul’s Cathedral.
He was given control of all government building in the country in 1669 when he was appointed surveyor of the royal works and was knighted in 1673.
Sir Christopher Wren was also commissioned to design the Royal Observatory in 1675 and a hospital for sailors in 1696. Both are at Greenwich. In 1997 UNESCO awarded World Heritage Site status was to ‘Maritime Greenwich’. The site includes the Royal Observatory, the National Maritime Museum, and the Queen’s House.
