Suddenly it creeps up on you.
One moment you are working full time, pushing for the next promotion, or spending your time raising the kids and ferrying them and their friends here and there, and the next you are waving them off to college and considering working part-time in the run up to retirement.
That’s when it hits you.
You’ve become middle aged and you need to re-evaluate who you are.
Start by looking at what you have, what you still want and what you want to let go off. There will be things you no longer need. Time for a declutter.
Not just your living space but your life. By clearing out the old, you can make space for the new.
You’ll also need to come to terms with who you no longer are. It can be hard to stop seeing yourself as the chair of the Parents Association or soccer mum once you become an Empty Nester. It can also be hard to stop seeing yourself as a full-time employee, if you plan to work part-time in the future.
What do you want to be now? Maybe a traveler. Or a writer.
Maybe you want to start a new hobby like painting or needlework.
Maybe you want to spend more time on your current hobbies. More time in your garden or playing sport, perhaps.
The good news is now you can. Now that you don’t have to ferry the kids places or worry about hitting a corporate deadline.
So take the time to work out what makes your soul sing.
Explore old dreams and new opportunities. Remember any unfulfilled dreams from your early life and look at new projects. The key is to try things without feeling you have to fully commit. It’s a chance to try things out and see what fits. Play and check out the opportunities that inspire you. You may be surprised.
For example, have you always through cruising would be great? Then when you tried it, you found you prefer land based travel? Change your plans to reflect the new you. You are now a person who likes road trips instead of sailing.
After you’ve given things a try, take a step back and reflect on what is right for you. Use middle age as a time to reflect on your life and see it with new eyes, then move forward, creating a more fulfilling life.
Create the life you deserve.
