The International Day of Happiness – 20th March

In 2011, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution which recognised happiness as a “fundamental human goal” and called for “a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples”.

In 2012 the UN General Assembly  decreed that the International Day of Happiness would be observed every year on 20 March. The first celebration took place in 2013.

How happy are we?

The Happy Planet Index  is the first global measure of sustainable well-being.

At the time of writing it reports that the United Kingdom achieves a Happy Planet Index Score of 31.9  and ranks 34th of all the countries analysed.

So what country topped the Happy Planet Index rankings?

The answer is – COSTA RICA

People living in Costa Rica have higher well-being score than the residents of many rich nations, including the Uk and USA  and they live longer than people in the USA.
