Agatha Christie, the queen of crime

Born Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller on 15 September 1890 in Torquay, Devon, South West England, in 1912 she met and married Archie Christie. They had a daughter, Rosalind, in 1919 but later divorced and Agatha married Max Mallowan, the world famous archaeologist. Their a marriage lasted forty-six years.

During WW1, Agatha became a nurse at the Red Cross Hospital in Torquay. Her life long interest in the use of poisons began when she was working in the Hospital dispensary, where she completed the examination of the Society of Apothecaries.

One of Agatha’s lifelong ambitions had been to travel on the Orient Express. She made her first journey in 1928.

The atmosphere of the Middle East had an immense impact on Agatha, that can be seen in Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, Murder in Mesopotamia, Appointment With Death and They Came to Baghdad as well as in many of her short stories. One of her non-fiction books is Come Tell Me How you Live, which describes her archeological travels with her husband Max.

After a hugely successful career and a very happy life Agatha died peacefully on 12 January 1976.
