Gilbert White’s House

Gilbert White was a “parson-naturalist”, a pioneering English naturalist and ornithologist. He is best known for his world-famous book Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne. The original manuscript of his book is on display in the house.

Discover Gilbert White’s story within his family home.

Explore Gilbert White’s unique 18th century garden.

Gilbert White was inspired by the English Landscape Movement to create a landscape garden in Selborne. Historic features of the garden that can still be seen include the original Haha, Sundial and Fruit Wall as well as the Great Oak planted in 1730.

The Oates Collections are also housed at Gilbert White’s museum.

The Oates Collection exhibits focus on the lives and adventures of two members of the Oates Family, both pioneers and explorers of the natural world.

Captain Lawrence Oates (1880 – 1912)

Captain Lawrence Edward Grace “Titus” Oates was a British army officer, and later an Antarctic explorer, who died during the Terra Nova Expedition. Oates, afflicted with gangrene and frostbite, walked from his tent into a blizzard.

Frank Oates (1840 – 1875)

Frank Oates, uncle of Captain Lawrence Oates, is the third of the explorers of the natural world commemorated at Selborne. Frank Oates was a British naturalist and explorer. He was one of the first Europeans to see the Victoria Falls.
