The City Adventurers had been summoned to London County Hall.
Leonard Vole stood accused of murdering a widow in order to inherit her wealth. The stakes were high. Could he and his lawyers convince the jury of his innocence, or would he face the hangman’s noose?
We arrived at London County Hall and took our seats in what used to be the Council Chamber. An impressive building, it was a fitting venue to use as a courtroom. The jury were already seated in the jury box and were sworn in before proceedings began.
Then the lights dimmed and we became embroiled in a gripping story of justice, passion, and betrayal. For this was a powerful performance of Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution.
A fantastic show by a very large cast. Recommended
Witness for the Prosecution
The Witness for the Prosecution began life as a short story in 1925 by Agatha Christie. She disliked the original ending and so changed it. She later adapted it into a play, which opened in 1953.
A film version of the play was released in 1958. Directed by Billy Wilder it started Tyrone Power, Charles Laughton and Marlene Dietrich. In 1982 another Witness for the Prosecution film was made. this one starred Beau Bridges, Ralph Richardson and Diana Rigg.
The current production at London County Hall stars Joshua Glenister as Leonard Vole, Owen Oakeshott as Sir Wilfred Robarts Q.C and Lauren O’Neil as Romaine Vole.
