Lift 109

THE CITY ADVENTURERS VISITED THE BATTERSEA POWER STATION CHIMNEY LIFT EXPERIENCE

“Prepare to ignite your curiosity, immerse your senses and elevate your perspective at London’s epic new viewing experience, Lift 109. Step inside the iconic Battersea Power Station and make a thrilling ascent 109 metres to the top of the north-west chimney where you will take in stunning 360 degree views of London’s skyline.”

We found Battersea, and the Lift 109 experience, easy to reach by public transport and easy to find. Arriving at the Lift 109 experience, we found the whole thing was well organised.

Lift 109 is housed in the Power Station’s magnificent Art Deco Turbine Hall A. After the security searches we entered to waiting area for our timed lift visit.  This area included a photo opportunity, where we could pose against various Battersea Power Station backdrops. We took a photo or two, although the timer to get into position was a little fast and one of us had to run into position before the flash went off!

The information panels as we waited to ride the lift were very informative. There was also an exhibition of original records and multimedia displays telling the story of the building’s rich heritage, its architectural significance and enduring presence in popular culture.

While the interactive artwork (steam) was beautiful we could not generate enough power to make it turn. We did manage to make it light a bit though. Although it was fun trying to power it , I’m guessing if you had a classful of children it would be possible to light it up fully.

When it was our turn to ride, we set off in a normal lift then climbed a few stairs to the actual 109 lift. There was a small lift available for wheelchairs and others who could not manage the steps.

Once in Lift 109 the excitement built as we whizzed up to the fantastic view. A series of lights guided our way up inside one of the iconic chimneys.

At the top we were greeted by a panoramic view like no other. It really was a new way to see London. The view from the top was amazing. It is not often you get to see the rooftops of West London and beyond. As we looked around at different bits of London, the panels along the side of the lift told us places of interest along our eyeline.

Back down we exited via the shop and had a chance to buy copies of our posed photos.

After the visit, we had a wander through the power station and admired the different parts of its construction. The area around the Battersea Power Station has undergone a regeneration. The 42 acres of industrial brownfield has been transformed into a vibrant new neighbourhood with an eclectic mix of independent and design-led shops, bars, restaurants etc. We selected one to stop for dinner and drinks.

A fantastic visit, and one we recommend
