The City Adventurers headed to the Queens Theatre to see another world premiere production
This new play tells the story of Wilko Johnson, the iconic rock star and founder of legendary Essex band Dr Feelgood. He was known for his unique guitar playing style, not using a pick but opting to rely on fingerstyle.
In 2012, Wilko was told he had inoperable cancer and a year to live. Refusing all treatment, he decided to spend his last months living meaningfully: seeing the people, places and things which meant most to him during his remarkable life. Then, a miracle happened….
The play follows the life of this Canvey Island legend from his teenage years to his final days. The first half takes us from his teenage years, and meeting the girl who would become his wife, through forming the band Dr Feelgood, to success as a showman and songwriter.
The second half continues the story of this rock ‘n’ roll maverick, from loosing his wife and leaving Dr Feelgood, to joining Ian Dury and The Blockheads and acting in “Game of Thrones” as Ser Ilyn Payne. Although, it is fair to say, his transition from being one of the godfathers of the punk movement, to his acting career was pretty much glossed over. The show ends with a mini tribute concert to Dr Feelgood.
Wilko Johnson died at his home, aged 75 November 21 2022.
Johnson Willis plays Wilko Johnson. He is ably assisted by Georgina Fairbanks, Jon House, Georgina Field and David John, who play everyone else. Written by Jonathan Maitland, this biographic play uses a mixture of words and music and quotes from the man himself to tell his story.
You can discover the story of the Wilko at the Queens Theatre Hornchurch until Saturday 24 February 2024.
