Kenwood House

The City Adventurers took a trip to Kenwood House, one of London’s hidden gems. Situated on the edge of Hampstead Heath, it is surrounded by tranquil landscaped gardens.

On a lovely autumn day, we arrived at the small car park to find it full of dog walkers, enjoying the local countryside. Those in the know managed to park on the surrounding streets, while the rest of us hung around the car park waiting for the chance to grab a space as someone left.

Then it was a short walk to the house itself. A magnificent building, built in the late 17th century, and remodeled in the 18th century by Robert Adam. It served as a residence for the Earls of Mansfield until 1925, when the house and part of the grounds were sold to Edward Guinness. He donated it to the nation in 1927. The estate was opened to the public the following year and is now managed by English Heritage.

We were met in the entrance hall by one of the volunteer guides who treated us to a very informative tour of the House. The house has some beautiful interiors and the guide gave some wonderful descriptions of how they had to move guests around to set up for dinner before the house was remodeled.

Everyone said how impressed they were with the outstanding collection of paintings, including works by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals. We even saw the famous painting of Dido Elizabeth Belle and her cousin Lady Elizabeth Murray that featured in the film “Belle”.

After our tour we headed to the café to enjoy a leisurely lunch together before exploring the extensive grounds.
