Myddleton House Gardens

The City Adventurers stepped into horticultural history at Myddleton House Gardens.

Located in Enfield, North London, Myddelton House Gardens offers a rich tapestry of horticultural heritage. This unique site was once the cherished residence of the influential botanist and plantsman E.A. Bowles, and the gardens today serve as a vibrant, living tribute to his exceptional passion and distinctive, eccentric vision.

E.A. Bowles, widely known by his affectionate nickname, “the Crocus King,” was a pivotal figure in early 20th-century gardening. The gardens provide a captivating glimpse into his diverse interests, showcasing an extensive collection of plants, many of which he personally discovered, cultivated, or introduced into general cultivation.

Beyond the botanical wonders, Myddelton House Gardens is dotted with the many quirky historical artifacts Bowles salvaged over the years. Notable examples include genuine stone components from the original London Bridge and a charming Victorian garden shed that he famously designated as his “Museum of Useless Objects.”
