Chatham’s legendary ship building heritage
The City Adventurers stepped into Chatham’s legendary ship building heritage. On our guided tour we learnt about the Age of Sail when the Dockyard built mighty ships that won command of the world’s oceans.
Exploring Chatham Historic Dockyard
We headed to Chatham Historic Dockyard for a fascinating look at more than 400 years of naval history. It’s one of those places where you can wander around and suddenly realise you’re standing somewhere that played a huge part in Britain’s maritime past.
We saw where ships were built and repaired. We even had a go at making rope ourselves and made a length of rope to take home.
Then came one of the highlights of the day: going aboard a submarine. It’s certainly not the place to visit if you’re looking for lots of personal space! Exploring the cramped interior gave us a real appreciation of what life must have been like for the men who lived and worked aboard these vessels.
With the historic buildings, ships, rope-making and submarine, there was plenty to explore and lots to talk about afterwards.

Even with a small group tour it was cramped. Also had to learn how to get through the hatches…. And yes I did get stuck the first time I tried!
Call the Midwife Locations Tour
Historic Chatham Dockyard is home to the official guided Call the Midwife tour.
While we were walking around Chatham Dockyard we spotted a group being lead by a costumed midwife around the buildings and roadways used to portray London’s Poplar in the show. (This was not part of our tour).
