World Heritage Site
The National Maritime Museum building started out as a school for seafarers children in 1807. Following an Act of Parliament establishing The National Maritime Museum in 1934, the museum was opened to the public by King George VI in 1937.
In 1997 UNESCO awarded World Heritage Site status was to ‘Maritime Greenwich’. The site includes The National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory and the Queen’s House.
In 2011 the largest development in the museum’s history, the Sammy Ofer wing, opened.
