Have passport, will travel!

Turns out my sister-in-law had better weather in Mallorca this winter than I did in India. So that got me reaching for the spring travel brochures……and that’s when I noticed the Brexit warnings for booking European trips.

So what should you be aware of?

There is a Government website that offers advice for British passport holders if the UK leaves the EU without a deal. It is entitled “Passport rules for travel to Europe after Brexit” Basically you need to check your passport will be valid before you book your trip to Europe.

After 29 March 2019:

  1. You should have at least 6 months left on your passport from your date of arrival. This applies to adult and child passports.
  2. If you renewed a passport before it expired, up to 9 extra months may have been added to your new passport’s expiry date. Any extra months on your passport over 10 years may not count towards the 6 months that should be remaining for travel to most countries in Europe.

The webpage stresses do not book travel unless your passport meets the entry requirements of the country you’re travelling to.

The government also has another useful website, Check a passport for travel to Europe, that offers a tool to check you have enough time left on your UK passport.

Quick Checklist

  • Check your passport before you book
  • Make sure if you need to apply for or renew your passport you do so in plenty of time.
  • If you need your passport urgently (within the next 3 weeks) you need to book a passport office appointment and pay online. You can book an appointment up to 3 weeks in advance.
