The lights of Broadway (on London’s West End) was the next theatre stop for the City Adventurers. This time we were seeing a musical. The Producers is playing at the Garrick Theatre.
Named after the great 18th-century actor David Garrick, this theatre is an intimate jewel box tucked away on Charing Cross Road. Its relatively small size makes it the perfect venue for Marber’s “up-close” revival, ensuring every satirical wink and high-kicking dance move lands with maximum impact.

The Play: The Producers
Based on Mel Brooks’ 1967 cult classic film, The Producers is the record-breaking musical that took the world by storm. This current West End revival, which transferred from a sold-out run at the Menier Chocolate Factory, is directed by Tony Award-winner Patrick Marber.
The story follows Max Bialystock, a washed-up Broadway producer, and Leo Bloom, a nervous accountant. Together, they hatch a “fail-proof” scheme: raise two million dollars for a surefire flop, close on opening night, and hop a plane to Rio with the cash.
The plan? Produce the worst play ever written and get it directed by the world’s most flamboyant director. The problem? It becomes a smash hit!
While the centerpiece of the show remains the outrageous title number from the play-within-a-play, “Springtime for Hitler”, the show manages to be “equally offensive to everyone”. It contains “sparkly swastikas,” chorus lines of Zimmer-frame-wielding grannies, and a level of camp that is truly breathtaking.
